popkin16: (so doing it)
Day 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?
Squee weekend, every year. I'm pretty quiet in real life - shy and self-conscious and always worried I'm going to make a fool of myself. But meeting everyone there felt like finding home, and I cry every time it's time to go. Supportive, creative, hilarious, generous - these are my people, and I love them. Just the other day I was remembering that time someone set off the sprinklers in the hotel we were staying at and how we had to evacuate in the early hours of the morning.

I don't like meeting famous people. I've discovered that I prefer to go unnoticed, and even the mildest acknowledgement from someone I look up to is incredibly embarrassing. Shane & Ryan from Unsolved started their own company called Watcher, and I'm a member of their patreon. They read off the usernames of their patreon members at the end of their one show, and every time I'm even told they said my username I'm like, "Oh god, please no."

Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?
I was reading Stephen King's The Dark Tower series back in high school. The main character, Roland, is from a different universe, and he ends up traveling to ours. When trying to order a sandwich, he asked for a 'popkin', and I loved the word so much I made it my online username. Popkin is taken on a lot of websites, however, so I had to add some numbers.

Day 5: Compare and/or contrast your very first fandom obsession and your very latest fandom obsession.
My very first fandom was Harry Potter. This is, of course, an absolutely ginormous fandom with fic for probably every pairing one could think of. Back then fandom was very much a secret thing, and it's very much not now.

My current one is Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Entertainment RPF, which is much smaller. Also Shane and Ryan know about the fanfiction written about them, and despite what people may think, have not come out one way or another in regards to it.

I also feel like fandom has become much more judgemental these days in regards to kinks and dark themes, but it's also possible that I missed all the drama back in the early 2000s. SGA was the first fandom I started reading kinky fic in, and by the time I joined the show was finished and a chunk of the fandom had moved on. Tumblr is much more multi-fandom and gives more visibility to posts of all kinds.

And now my brain has decided it's done thinking and I'm just staring at my screen, so I'm gonna post this.

I kept meaning to start this and then getting distracted >.<

Most of these answers will be too short to make a whole post for, so I'm combining. Plus, I keep slacking on this and I do love June Something, so.
What is your favorite celebrity interaction from any fandom you've had?
I haven't met that many actors and tbh I usually like to go unnoticed. But my favorite celebrity interaction is probably when I met Joe. I got his autograph and we chatted for just a couple minutes about how I was left handed. I also had a photo op with him which was awesome - he's very thin, in real life. And it was a hot day so his body was really warm too lolll. But mostly I'm just like, "Boy am I glad I'm just one in a thousand faceless people to him."
What is a kink that fandom introduced you to, and you said, "Yes, Please!"
Every kink. I legit didn't read kink fic until Stargate Atlantis loll. I started with xanthe and blueraccoon and here I am. I love sub!Rodney and dirty talk. Ooo and docking thanks to @melagan.
Is there any fandom that you regret getting into?
The MCU. I am a Tony stan first and foremost, so it was AWFUL reading all the anti-Tony posts on tumblr as people turned against him. Fuck that fandom.
Besides deathfic, rape/non-con, what is something that, no matter the pairing, you nope out of when it comes to reading?
INCEST. I can't read it. John and Rodney in speranza's capable hands couldn't do it. If that combo can't, nothing can. The closest I can come is step-siblings fic (of which there is barely any), and only fic they meet when they're teens. If they grew up together as siblings, then it's icky to me.
How open are you about being in fandom to your non-fandom friends/family?
My family knows NOTHING about slash and what I read online. They know I'm a big fan of Stargate and collection Stargate-related memorabilia, but that's about it.

My co-worker became my best friend after we bonded about Stiles/Derek. I don't think she reads that much fic anymore, but she knows I'm still into it. Other than that, the only RL friends that know about me are my Squee family.
popkin16: (john surprised)
What is something that has surprised you about a fandom? Like, you expected the main fandom pairing to be X/Y, but the main pairing in fandom is actually X/Z. Or a pairing you expected to be slashed together isn't very popular?
All the ships I like that aren't popular shocks me ;) No, I'm kidding.

I think the latest trend in purity policing fandom is kind of shocking to me. I hate it.. I've been in fandom for god, 19 years now? I don't remember anything like this, where people try to claim certain ships are "wrong" or "bad". I mean, I knew shipping wars were a thing, and sometimes that plays into the purity policing, but there are people who truly believe that certain ships are wrong, even if they aren't a member of that fandom and have no horse in the race, so to speak. There are multiple reasons for this trend - tumblr has played a big part in it - but it's weird to me that people are so vehemently opposed to something that doesn't impact them personally.

I miss the days when fandom was more underground, or at least an open secret never referenced to TPTB. I know for a fact I've missed a lot of wank, that part of this might be seeing through rose-colored glasses, but fandom to me has always been about shipping what you want and writing what interested in you, no matter how dark it is. No matter how gross other people find it. Fandom was - is? - freedom. Stay in your own lane and let people do what they want. That's what the back button is for. I knew that at age 12 when I joined without being told.

(Luckily I haven't had anybody try to tell me that I'm doing fandom wrong. I'm pretty sure that'll set my temper off)

You get to fuck/marry/kill in one fandom. What's the fandom, and who in the fandom fits each item?
Fuck: I'm asexual so this is a difficult question. While I find fanfic hot, the idea of anyone touching me in particular makes me go NO THANKS very fast. I'd probably go with John Sheppard as the most visually appealing character, and he doesn't seem the type to be all that sex driven. I mean, he likes it (I assume, since he never comes right out and says it), but he's not constantly hitting on hot women soooo.

Marry: Chucknician! We don't see a lot of him in canon, but he seems competent and cute. And he could tell me all the gossip about what he sees and overhears in the gateroom ;) That's the thing with minor characters - you can make what you will of them, and Chuck in my head is just a nice, fun guy.

Kill: I want to go for someone obvious like Kolya or Michael. Or Todd. All really good choices for obvious reasons. But instead, I'm going to go with Ladon Radim just for the fun factor. He cares about his people and his sister, yes, but I could never trust him. What game is he playing now? What does he want? Is he just using me to get info on Atlantis (assuming I'm living there lol). The constant stress would give me a breakdown.

If you were introducing your favorite fandom to someone new, what one episode would you make them sit down and watch?
Oh man, good question. My forever fandom is Stargate Atlantis. It really depends on what I want that person to get out of the show.

If they're the type that can't get into the show unless they enjoy the plot/worldbuilding/whatever, I'd probably start with Rising. As I told [personal profile] mific, it's a great introduction to the series because John doesn't know what the fuck is happening either, so you get to experience everything for the first time with him. It barely has any McShep and Rodney isn't himself (since the role was originally written for a different character) but in terms of plot and the expeditions circumstances, it does a good job.

If I wanted to introduce them to McShep, oh boy. The Shrine is probably THE McShep episode and it's really good. But I do think it has more impact if you know the characters when you watch it. John's heartbroken face and Rodney's struggle hurt more. Ooo, I think maybe Miller's Crossing. Rodney's desperation to save his sister is relatable, and he goes to John to get permission to sacrifice himself. And we learn John would go pretty fucking far for Rodney, which speaks to their bond.

My current obsession is Buzzfeed Unsolved, and I'd probably go with the D.B Cooper episode. It's early in the show so the quality isn't as high, but it does a great job showing Ryan and Shane's chemistry. It's genuinely funny and D.B Cooper is a super interesting unsolved case. For Supernatural, maybe the Bigfoot episode? The boys wandering around a forest while Shane makes a stupid Bigfoot call is fun, and they're very cute.
popkin16: (oh. bitchcakes)
Who is the first character that you fell in love with?
Hmmm. I'm afraid I don't have much of an interesting answer for this question. I honestly don't remember. Harry Potter was probably my first obsession - it was certainly my first fandom. I reread all of the books multiple times and I can't even tell you how much fanfiction I read - and I wasn't picky about ships. I remember keeping a little notebook where I'd painstakingly write out the URL to fics I liked. But would I say that it was the first character I fell in love with? I feel like there should have been one before that, but maybe not?

I'm going to go with Harry Potter, because I can't think of anything else lol.
popkin16: ("john")
You're stuck in quarantine with two people from different fandoms. Who are they, and who "breaks" first?

Hmm. Honestly, quarantine sounds like a dream to me, introvert that I am. (Though I know I'd probably be so bored a week in). I'd want calm characters who are capable of being quiet and/or keeping to themselves, with the occasional social interaction. Or warm, sweet characters who are easy to be around.

I'm going to say Foggy Nelson, because he's sweet and kind. He'd be good company when I wanted it, and I feel like he'd totally understand that sometimes I need time alone to recharge. We'd watch movies together and he'd crack jokes - it'd just be fun. Plus he looks like he gives good hugs <3

I'm less sure about my second answer. When I first read this question, my brain went Teyla Emmagen because she's very calming and she gets people. She'd keep herself occupied with working out and meditation, and it'd be fun to introduce her to Earth media. I'm just not sure we'd have a lot to talk about? On the other hand I'm super awkward in real life so maybe she'd see how awkward I'm feeling and give me space lolll.

Foggy would definitely break first. He's sweet and good with people. He'd get restless, want to have some fun. Be around people again.
popkin16: (you're so mine)
What's a new fandom that you've fallen into since the last June Something/in the last year?
I think there's two?

Good Omens was a new fandom for me, though the book fandom has been around for some time. I really adored the mini-series and read some really good fic. This fandom is a weird one for me though, because while I read quite a bit of fic, little of it gave me that rush you get when you read something really good. This is not a criticism of the fic or the fandom - for whatever reason, I just wasn't connecting with what was being put out. I still have some fic bookmarked to read that I'd like to get back to, but I'll have to watch the mini-series first. I kind of miss these idiots ♥

The second fandom has really taken over my life, and that'd be Buzzfeed Unsolved. It's just really funny, with short episodes, so it's the perfect way to relax after a crazy day at work. Plus, the hosts of the show are still putting out new episodes - not of BFU, but new, original stuff. So there is new content, fic, discussions, etc. It is RPF (at least the portion that I lurk is), which has always been controversial, and every now and then I'll see a post from someone about how disgusting we are, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There's some REALLY good fic, but I'm so desperate for stuff to read that I've been reading damn near anything.

(SGA is still my #1, forever and always though)

my dear
the problem is that
you love him so much
you would allow him
to drag you all the way to hell
if it meant you could
hold his hand
on the way down
