I'm writing a Practical Magic AU for the [community profile] atlantisfilmfestival. I've wanted to do it for aaaaages, because I love the idea of little Rodney wishing that his true love will be this impossible person so he'll never have to fall in love. And then John shows up *grins*

But a lot of the movie isn't about romance. It's about the sisters. I'm about 9k in and John hasn't even shown up yet, and I'm starting to feel like there's just not enough McShep in my McShep fic. I'm a McShep girl FIRST, always. The whole desire to write this fic was for Rodney's wish, even if I do find the witchy bits super fun.

There's also not enough time left for me to start another film fusion lol. The wonderful [personal profile] escriveine  assures me the fic is wonderful. But! But the boys! And their love!

Maybe I should write a really schmoopy McShep fic after I finish this. Just a quick one-shot. I have no ideas, but maybe it'll make me feel better.
popkin16: (hugs!)
Hey guys! [community profile] atlantisfilmfestival is now open for posting. The minimum word count for a movie fusion is only 1k ;) There's even an ao3 collection :D This is a low-key festival, no sign ups or anything required. If you're inspired, write and post~ I know what I'd like to get done (mcshep Practical Magic au)!

After three years, my job has switched me from second shift to mostly first (with a couple second shifts thrown in). It's been a difficult transition for me. I've never been much of a morning person. Working second shift meant I could stay up a little later and sleep in more, which I haven't been able to do lately. I'm tired all the time. I haven't written anything in ages, and what I have written feels flat. Mostly I've just been reading...

I'm hoping I can force myself to finish the next chapter of my werewolf AU (which I already have a start on) and, if I finish quickly enough, maybe get something done for the Atlantis Film Festival. No promises though, given how dull I've been feeling lately.

popkin16: (Default)

I updated my werewolf au.

It wouldn’t be anywhere near as coherent without the wonderful [personal profile] respoftw looking it over AND talking me down from the ledge (AGAIN). Seriously, guys. She puts up with so much.

I've got the next 'stage' of the fic planned. Hopefully I can do it justice re: Rodney's emotional growth and attachment to John & the pack.

4thewords

popkin16: (so doing it)
I read this post on tumblr about this website called 4thewords.com. You basically play a game where the "battle" is writing - you fight a monster, say, that requires you to write 300 words in 45 minutes. If you manage that, you defeat the monster, who will drop items you can use for crafting, or money you can use to buy armor upgrades or whatever. There are quests - right now I'm working on winning my avatar a rainbow pride shirt. To do that, I have to defeat a 5 of a certain type of monster by July 15th.

Anyway, you get a 30 day free trial to see if you like it, and then you can pay $4 a month. So far I've written 3 days in a row, about 2k. After writing nothing for MONTHS, I'm super proud of myself. And you get prizes for maintaining your writing streak :D Of course, because of the timed challenges, I'm producing more quantity over quality. I talked with [personal profile] selenic76  and [personal profile] melagan  this morning and have realized just how much work my werewolf AU is going to be. My first draft is going to be utter shit, to be honest. I'm not used to writing longer, slow burn stuff, so there are going to be pacing issues, plot issues, etc. But I'm excited. It'll be quite the learning opportunity, and I do think my werewolf idea is a good one.

If you decide to join, my referral code is GEOJT30185.

My birthday is coming up - July 23rd. I turn 29. I'm already at the point where I have to do math to figure out how old I am, lolll. But at least I got my birthday off!

I've been struggling to figure out what to read lately, though not for lack of choice. I've been toying with the idea of rereading A Clear and Different Light, which I've only read once. Before that, I read The Pegasus Device, which is a McShep noir detective AU written in first person, and before that [personal profile] sgamadison's wonderful A Civil Contract.

I'm thinking of hosting another SGA Author Appreciation Week on tumblr, where you pick an author and recommend your top 5 fics by them. It was a decent success the last time I ran it, and I'd love to do something relatively easy, but also...IDK, bringing the community together, or something. A shared activity. I just have to pick a week, decide how soon in advance I want to announce it, etc.

popkin16: (atlantis)
I recently discovered an easy way to transfer your google doc stuff to ao3. Copying and pasting never seems to work, as the code gets all messed up, and I have to go in and manually separate the paragraphs. I can't imagine how much that would suck if I wrote really long fic.
  1. After you've finished writing your fic in google documents, click "Add-ons > Get Add-ons".
  2. Type in "html", without quotations.
  3. You should see something that's called GD2md-html. Click +FREE
  4. Mine asked me to choose an account to associate this add-on with, so just select whatever email works best for you.
  5. Click "Add-ons > GD2md-html > Convert."
  6. A little side window pops up. Hit the blue HTML button. It'll say "Converting" and something like, "Your output will appear here."
  7. Copy and paste the output into ao3. I recommend hitting "preview" to make sure everything looks good to you, because I am paranoid and have social anxiety, so looking like an idiot in front of people terrifies me.
  8. Post.
  9. ???
  10. Profit.
I've used it twice now and both times its worked well for me. But I also write really short stuff, so *shrug*
popkin16: (the love of your life)
I keep meaning to update and then forgetting.

- January is usually the quietest time of year at work, but a nearby K-Mart closed, so all those customers are heading our way. We got this new cleaning cart at work that sounds good in theory, but in practice it's awful. One of my co-workers is being really pushy about using it, which pisses me off. He actively avoids doing the work that the cart is needed for, and yet badgers us when we use the old cart. If you love the new cart so much, do the work the cart is used for YOURSELF.

- That said, I'm one of the lucky ones being bumped up to $11 an hour, though it makes me sad that a bunch of Sam's Clubs are closing. As soon as I heard we were getting a store-wide raise, I turned to a friend of mine and said, "This is going to bite us in the ass somehow." I feel awful for all those people losing their jobs.

- I'm working on a werewolf AU for romancing mcshep! I've had a long, productive conversation with [personal profile] sgamadison who helped me out a great deal with plot and worldbuilding. Now it's just the hard part: reminding myself that perfection is the enemy of done. I just got to get it down, I can edit it later. Who cares if I'm rambling now? JUST WRITE.

- Also on the fandom front, I am making my very first fanvid! A McShep one, of course. I heard James Bay's Need The Sun To Break, and for the first time ever kept picturing specific scenes for a bunch of the lyrics. There have been a lot of songs over the years that made me think of my boys, but I've never had that happen before. I thought about making a gifset but realized I'd have to make a gif for each line, and a fanvid would make more sense. It's so hard. Luckily I have a friend who makes fanvids - some of which you may remember - and she's given me great advice. Some people do a great job of making scenes match the beat, but I think for my first fanvid I'm going to worry about just matching scenes to the words, lol. I'm super proud and pleased with what little I have done of my fanvid, even if part of me is like, "This is such a hot mess."

But I get to stare at John and Rodney and pick clips where they're super in love, so it's worth it.

popkin16: (kisses)

For a long time - 5 years or so - I’ve wanted to write a fic where Rodney adopts a Pegasus kid who is mute. Rodney’s mother was deaf so he’s fluent in sign language, and he teaches it to the child. I was worried about inadvertently ignoring the kid’s culture or somehow doing something wrong (like making Rodney into a White Savior, or something), so I’ve put it off.

Then, today. I was thinking about Kanaan, and how we never see much of him. What even is his role among the Athosians? He didn’t strike me as a hunter. Does he know how to stick fight? I had this image of Rodney dismissively thinking he was probably a farmer or some such.

And then I thought: what if Rodney goes to Teyla for advice about how to adopt this kid without stepping on anyone’s toes, except she’s not home - and Kanaan is. So Rodney reluctantly agrees to wait for her, and Kanaan politely asks what Rodney is seeking Teyla for. Kanaan points out that if he teaches this child sign language, he should probably teach others too, so the kid can talk to others beside Rodney.

Later, Rodney realizes - Kanaan isn’t a farmer, he’s a teacher. He teaches the kids to read, write, and count (other people handle teaching them tracking/survival skills).

Rodney goes back to Teyla’s quarters, and she looks so surprised and pleased when Rodney says he’s there to talk to Kanaan (about how to set up lessons and effective teaching methods, etc.)

And then Rodney holds a class (with Kanaan as his patient, amused assistant).

There’s McShep shenanigans! John's very intent on learning, and then they fall into a co-parenting thing.

popkin16: (oh. bitchcakes)
I've been really struggling to write lately. I want to want to write, if that makes sense. I haven't made progress on anything in ages. I don't like my own writing, but I react with such abnormally strong hatred toward the stuff that I do manage to get out. I have a ton of ideas I'd love to actually write out, but the motivation just isn't there.

For the rewatch, I started off writing a small ficlet for each episode. I managed one for 38 Minutes but haven't posted it anywhere, and I've done nothing for Suspicion. I'd love to work on my harlequin - I have ideas! Romantic, dramatic ideas! As well as my dragon AU. But I'm feeling meh about everything, and just end up reading and writing.

I may end up declaring a semi-hiatus from writing just so I don't feel like I'm letting myself down.

A Dream

Before Squee, I had this semi-incoherent dream that I thought was very interesting. I wrote it out (and fixed it up so it made more sense) and posted it to tumblr. I forgot to post it here.

I've had this fic idea stuck in my head that I like quite a bit. It's FAR outside my comfort zone, both in terms of plot and content. I've got about 3k down and I'm just...not happy with any of it. To a degree that isn't normal for me (since I never like my writing). I think one of my problems is that I got the idea and just immediately started writing about it, but I should maybe sit down, work out some of the worldbuilding, maybe redo some of the plot. I'd really hate for my struggle to kill whatever motivation and fondness I have for the idea.

I was so so excited to find a package from [personal profile] squidgiepdx - a signed copy of Migrations! I took a selfie with the book, I just have to get off my lazy bum to post it :D

My brother agreed to continue paying the bills, but we decided that - because he has a baby on the way - we should probably start looking into finding a cheaper place to live so he'll have money to, you know, buy diapers and other necessities. We should be picking up the title to our new place tomorrow, have some minor repairs to deal with, and then...moving. Again. We've tentatively figured out that I can afford cable/internet, but we'll see how reality shapes up. I'll keep everyone apprised :)

3 New Fics

Jan. 16th, 2017 08:55 am
popkin16: (so doing it)
I've written 3 McShep fics for fandom_stocking. We still have the rest of the week to fill out stockings, so I'm hoping to get at least two more done :)

Signs From the Universe for [personal profile] squidgiepdx [8k]
Five times John and Rodney 'meet cute', and the one time they finally end up together. AKA a string of connected meet cutes.

Take Me To The Wild for [personal profile] tarlanx  [6k]
When Rodney stumbles into John's bar one evening, he learns that he and his two co-workers are not the only creatures who have left the safety of Atlantis.

On The Shelves for [personal profile] melime  [1k]
Rodney's first book signing, after two years, is at John's bookstore.

popkin16: (Default)

I'm very proud of myself for this :D

I really need to get on making that sticky post so I can start encouraging myself to write every day...
popkin16: (Default)
I think this is my first time actually posting on DW and not just importing all my journal entries. Hopefully crossposting works! My DW needs so much work - I need to change out my icons and work on my layout (the text is so tiny, whyyy).

My New Year's Resolution is two-fold, the first of which - <i>be more positive</i> - is new. It's going to be a difficult one, since my family is always running into financial woes. The second is the same as last year: write more than the previous year. I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] mini_wrimo in November and it really helped keep me writing. I'm thinking of making a sticky-post to keep track of my daily word count - I'll comment each day with how much I wrote. It won't always be more than 0, but hopefully I won't go days without writing.

One positive of 2016 is my success at writing more. In 2015 I wrote 6,721 words total for the year. In 2016 I wrote 45,397. I'm really proud of myself for that, even if I know some people who could write that in one story alone, lol. Hopefully I'll fill my goal of writing even more than 45k! I have tons of ideas, it's just the hard part: actually writing them.

My 2016 Fics

Wrecked
+ Experienced, 1907 words.
Danny's a bit lost while Owen is charting the island.

Stargate
+ Making A Choice, 6679 words. Written for Tarlan and part of the [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep .
John knows something has to change to make Weres more accepted on Atlantis. He has a feeling there are more than just a few who share his secret.

+ Division 52, 18644 words. Written as part of the Conspiracy Challenge and a Men in Black crossover.
John never expected aliens.

Refresh My Memory, 1906 words. Co-written with [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore.
John, Rodney and the day after a drunken night of sex...

Gifts Worth Giving, 1138 words. Written for [livejournal.com profile] selenic76.
Wooing, Rodney McKay style.

Riding A Desk, 2170 words. Pure porn.
This was Rodney's favorite kind of meeting.

+ Take Me To The Wild, 6214 words. Written for fandom_stocking and hasn't been revealed yet. I'll make a post when it's finally open for reading.

Right out the gate of 2017, I have at least 2 fics to be written and Romancing McShep to start thinking about. Hopefully it's a sign of how the year will go :)

popkin16: (☂ all the fun things go by that name)
Things are really taking off at work. 'Tis the season, and all that. I'm always drained by Saturday night, and two days doesn't seem like enough to recover. I work Christmas Eve, 9am to 6pm (when the store closes). My boss said she was scheduling a bunch of people to work 7-4, so at least I'll have help.

I finished Stranger Things, which was amazing. It's also resulted in my first ot3 - Jonathan/Nancy/Steve. Most of the fic for them is kind of same-y though, so I haven't read everything (not that there's much to read). I loved watching the kids on the show, but not enough to seek out fic for them. Joyce/Hopper tends to be a background pairing, so I haven't really read anything for them either. I've been looking for something to replace ST to watch on my own and I've started Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which is entirely the fault of [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx! There are only 7 episodes, so it shouldn't take me too long to finish, and then I think I'll watch The Expanse.

fandom_stocking has gone live, and I'm hoping to do fills for at least three people ([livejournal.com profile] tarlanx, [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx, and [livejournal.com profile] goddess47). Ideally, I'd like to do something for all the McShep shippers, but given how slow at writing I am and the way my ideas tend to get out of control...plus, I want to do something for Winter Magic. I have a teeth-rottingly sweet fic idea that I can hopefully do justice for that. I'm considering signing up for my own stocking (I have two days left to decide), but I worry about giving back as much as I receive. I'm already 3k into a fill for [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx, so I am hopeful about getting things done.

[livejournal.com profile] sgamadison is doing a December Love Meme over on her journal. Stop by and check it out - it's inspiring some great fandom love :)

I got into a fight with some family members on facebook about the 2016 presidential election. My aunt called my words "hateful", which I found darkly amusing, considering the crap Trump has said and gotten away with. My aunt is rich, white, and married. She has little to worry about, with him. These fights have made me very nervous about Christmas, however. I doubt they'll say anything, as it'll be a holiday and they'll want it to be a nice one, but they can be passive aggressive or ignore me completely...I guess we'll see.

I have a 6 page paper due on Wednesday I have no motivation to work on. And next time I get some spare money, I'm getting my nose pierced.

That's it for updates *shrug*

Not much is new this week!

I do want to mention how [livejournal.com profile] mini_wrimo is really helping me write a little every day. I've seen a goal of 200 words a day and it can be about anything, but I've been trying to do 200 words of fic-writing. Even if I absolutely hate what I've written - and oh boy, have I had days like that - I've made steady progress on my fic, and I only have two more scenes to go (the fic sits at 16k presently). One of which is a sex scene, though I couldn't decide if I should even include one - is it going to disrupt the flow of my story? I guess I'll find out when I send it to beta. (Once I have a beta, anyway. I don't want to assume the people who looked over the first chapter will want to look over the second).

I might create a personal mini-wrimo post on my livejournal and then just comment every day with my word count in the hopes that it'll continue to motivate me to write XD I have so many fic ideas and it would be great to actually get some of them off my list~
popkin16: (☂ by your side i'll make it)
Just a quick update to let everyone know I am still chipping away at my Conspiracy fic. The entire fic so far has broken 10k, which is really long for me, lol. I've actually just started the Big Revelation Scene and after this I only have vague ideas of the direction I want the fic to go, so we'll see how things play out. But we're getting there :)

popkin16: (♪ catch me if ever I fall)
I've decided to try and post at least once a week about things that aren't just complaints about the crappiness of life :P

First, a tiny gift for [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx:

Surprise! )

[livejournal.com profile] story_works is hosting a Conspiracy Theory challenge, which I've signed up for. I think I need a kick in the pants to get some writing done, since I haven't done any in ages. So many plans, but so much laziness to overcome lol. I'll be doing a Men in Black crossover thing, though as it stands I don't know how much of the fic is actually going to focus on the crossover aspect - it may end up being more of a background thing. But a friend on tumblr gave me this fantastic detail for the fic that I'm hoping I have fun with :D

I have [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx's new fic to read, which looks really good. The author of Mer's Moving Castle recently posted on tumblr asking if someone is willing to read through the rest of the fic before she posts. I volunteered (though I have to reread what she already has posted) and I'm super excited. I like this author and I'm very intrigued by the fic.

I remember now why I don't post every week - nothing much happens in my life that's worth reporting, lol. I work and read~

nihilvanum's words:

my dear
the problem is that
you love him so much
you would allow him
to drag you all the way to hell
if it meant you could
hold his hand
on the way down
