"Nothing happens to post about in the SGA fandom," I said, and
sgamadison rightly responded that not posting is just making the fandom even quieter. There's more activity on tumblr, but I miss actual discussions. Though I'm giving serious consideration to setting up an automatic crossposter between mcshep-everyday and dreamwidth/livejournal to try and boost the fandom over here.
Anyway, in an effort to bring fandom back to journaling sites:
I've been reading Pegasus Purgatorio lately. I have only read it once, way back when I first joined the fandom, so it's practically brand new to me. It's interesting how the author twisted canon - like making Kanaan the leader of Michael's mutants. I do love the idea of Atlantis evacuating Pegasus planets to empty Milky Way ones, though. I have no idea how John and Rodney are going to make it back to Earth, though lol.
Lately, I've been giving a lot of thought to rereading fics I've only been through once, a long time ago - fics like The Whaleverse and A Face That Nobody Knows. I've also given some thought to reading the Ex Patria series, but I already know that John and Rodney being in an open relationship is going to bother me, so why torture myself? BUT THE PLOT LOOKS SO COOL. But their relationship...but the PLOT... Anyway, If you're cool with that kind of thing, you should check that series out - I've heard nothing but good things! If it helps, I think I was told that John & Rodney are only ever explicitly with each other. I think.
I've been making brief forays in to the Harry Potter fandom too, but I am EPIC picky about my HP fic. All of it basically has to be EWE (epilogue? what epilogue?). I don't care if it's Hogwart's Eight Year fic, or something that takes place more in the future, but I'm not interested in reading fic set back during book 5, say. If you're looking for an amazing author, check out saras_girl. She single-handedly got me back into HP after more than a decade away from the fandom.
I also read Cinderwings, an Dean/Castiel Supernatural sort-of Cinderella AU, but it's so much more than that.
Not too long ago, I finished reading Strong Poison, a Peter Wimsey novel. I was surprised by how fast I became smitten with Peter <3 I already have the next book (I'm focusing on the ones that have Harriet Vane in them) but I have to be in the mood for books.
What is everyone reading these days?

Date: 2018-04-26 06:44 am (UTC)This makes me REALLY HAPPY. I confess, I see you on my tumblr feed and I'm like, "I'm going to miss her SO MUCH when she moves on." Though you DO have so much still to discover, and I envy that :)
McShep is still 95% of what I read. If I go too long without reading it, I start to miss John and Rodney like they're family I haven't seen in a while.
OH MY GOD, HAPPY TRAILS ♥ ♥ I love that fic so much. And there are countless times when I bring that fic up just to read the end, when Rodney rushes out of the airport to yell for John and admits he wants to stay <33333333 All You Can Squeeze From A Lemon is so good too. Every time I go looking for fic to read on mcshep-everyday, I try to choose stuff that a). love and/or b). you might not have read yet.

Date: 2018-04-26 07:01 am (UTC)That's a HUGE relief.
LOL That's how I am too, with all media I consume. "What if this were a crossover or a fusion?"
You've already put out such a high volume of quality fics, so nobody can complain if you take a bit of time! Now that school is over and my cold is gone, I should really get back to writing, too.

Date: 2018-04-26 10:51 am (UTC)I really like Pegasus Purgatorio - an interesting AU. There’s a partial podfic, which sadly probably won’t be completed, the podficcer having wandered to other fandoms.
And SGA is still my core fandom and the one I read and play the most in, even though I explore a bit elsewhere. That’s not going to change. :)

Date: 2018-04-26 11:40 am (UTC)You really know how to sell it though, damn! Atlantis characters being badass! New, sexy uniforms! Plot! I waaaant.
I've been getting really into podcasts lately, so a podfic would have been peeeerfect. Especially since my work's wifi doesn't like Ao3. Too bad :((
I'm so glad SGA is still your core fandom ♥ Honestly, that's probably my biggest fear: being the last one standing. And you are an amazing writer too!

Date: 2018-04-26 05:05 pm (UTC)I really think Ex Patria would be okay, as the het relationships are very pragmatic, just about having the kids really, and are only mentioned - not important to the plot at all, and are more part of how the whole expedition is way more integrated with Pegasus in this AU. There are lots of hot John and Rodney scenes, plus a part where Rodney goes seriously badass that you’d love. I’m talking myself into a re-read here!

Date: 2018-04-26 11:29 pm (UTC)Okay, you've convinced me LOL I'll give it a try, at the very least. Maybe I'll surprise myself :D
You are very persuasive~

Date: 2018-04-26 03:47 pm (UTC)I recently rewatched all five seasons of Person of Interest and doing some reading in the fandom. There is a shocking lack of PoI/Sentinel crossovers. Just saying.
I've read The Expanse novels and I'm watching the show now that the new season has started.
Honestly, this show is much easier to follow if you've read the novels.
I go through stages where I take out a half dozen books from the library at a time. If the plot sounds good, I'll give it a try.
That said, I read for characters more than plot. If the characters are engaging I'll read about them eating toast and reading the back of a cereal box.
If the characters don't engage me, I don't care how many murders they solve or whatever the hell they're up too. Because I've already closed that book and reached for another one.

Date: 2018-04-26 10:57 pm (UTC)Are you going to fix the lack of POI/Sentinel fic? You should, you do an amazing job and every fandom should be filled with those.
I've started The Expanse series, but I keep taking a brief break to read a different book, and then I want to read fic, and then I'm like, "Oh yeah, I need to finish The Expanse." I also have been eyeing WOOL by Hugh Howey a lot lately...
You and I are the same: very character-driven. If we don't like the characters, we're done.

Date: 2018-04-26 11:26 pm (UTC)While I homeschooled my youngest son during his teenage years, I developed interest in WW ll and read many, many books on it
I have recently been rereading some of that WW ll history and a book written by Joseph Volpe, who managed the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years. It’s surprisingly entertaining. Still my main reads are John and Rodney. I’ve been in the fandom for 8 years and don’t see myself losing interest at all. We’ve gotten some fantastic newish writers and I devour each story as it’s posted. There are probably too many fics that I can read over and over again. Pegasus Purgatorio was excellent and it might be time to read that again. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves by Auburn has a similar feel and I recently revisited that one.

Date: 2018-04-27 07:34 am (UTC)WWII is fascinating. I've watched documentaries about it for fun. I'm glad you don't foresee yourself losing interest in McShep. I should really remind myself that just because it's quiet doesn't mean nobody's there. We really HAVE gotten some fantastic new-ish writers, and I'm so grateful to them!
You know, I haven't actually read Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves. I have it pulled up in a tab, but I'm so intimidated by auburn - she writes angst on a level I can't handle, usually, so I tend not to read her stuff. But it looks really good!

Date: 2018-04-27 08:02 am (UTC)I get your trepidation for reading Auburn, but if you can handle the stuff respoftw writes, you probably can handle Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves I feel like it was her least angsty work. One of the things I dearly loved was her treatment of Lindsey Novak. Her character was developed brilliantly and resonated strongly with me. I also got a big kick out of Rodney preferring the name Meredith for a change.
Give the story a try. I really don’t think it’s too much, but if I’m wrong you can come back and berate me forever. 🙂

Date: 2018-04-27 06:12 pm (UTC)Hmmm. I trust your opinion on fics, including Auburn's work, so I will give Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves a try! It does look reaaaaaally good...plus, I love respoftw's work LOL

Date: 2018-04-27 12:14 am (UTC)But I do keep coming back to SGA (and SG1), that's my touchstone and where I have *friends* instead of names-I-know... it really does make a difference.
I was looking at the upcoming SGA Reverse Bang sign-ups (I needed to put the dates on my to-do calendar) and it felt like old home week....
::hugs::

Date: 2018-04-27 07:32 am (UTC)Ooo, are you going to sign up for the Reverse Bang then? That'd be FANTASTIC.
