Computer Woes
Sep. 16th, 2012 12:54 amI am stressed and frustated and wanted to give everyone a heads up.
My computer is broken.
It doesn't like recognizing when it's plugged in. The battery will get low, my computer will basically say "Warning: Power levels are low, please plug your computer in." But plugging in my laptop does nothing. It's like my computer doesn't even recognize it's plugged in - the battery will not charge. When the battery gets too low, my computer will shut down from a lack of power. For the last couple of weeks I've gotten by, mostly because I can fiddle with the part of the power cord that plugs into the laptop and get it working again. Much like when one headphone is dying, you can twist the little plug, and if you twist the plug just so, the headphone will start working again - that's my laptop.
Only tonight it's refusing to do even that. No matter how I fiddled, my computer wouldn't recognize it's plugged in. I've bought a new battery. I've bought a new power cord. It seems it's a problem with the hardware. Monday I'm going to call around and get quotes on how much it'd cost to fix, but since I have terrible damn luck, something tells me I may as well just get a new laptop (which I won't have the money for until February).
So I'm going to have to borrow my mom's laptop, which makes reading porn...awkward. She has one of those mini-laptops, with no CD drive and limited memory, but it's better than nothing.
And now I'm going to go cry from frustration and eat chocolate.

Date: 2012-09-16 07:58 am (UTC)Turns out it was the power cord plug-in port itself that was mashugana. The replacement part was around ten bucks, but you could only get it online.

Date: 2012-09-16 10:33 am (UTC)Ten bucks is totally doable. Please let whatever's wrong with my laptop need only $10 to fix. Only getting it online could be a problem though...

Date: 2012-09-16 01:16 pm (UTC)which, SUCKED DISHWATER. now this was 15 years ago and at that time it was going to cost 900 to get a new mother board.
However it sounds like you were getting SOME power in for a while so maybe it just is a loose or broken connection. FINGERS CROSSED FOR YOU.
Using someone else's computer is *AWKWARD*. Do you have a phone or an e-reader? If you had a kindle I could download porn for you and email it to your kindle account. (in case you didn't know, you can email PDFs to a kindle - every kindle has an email addy that you can set up through amazon)
HAHA, if you can't ask friends to download porn for you, WHO CAN YOU ASK??

Date: 2012-09-16 04:38 pm (UTC)At least you have some machine to borrow, awkward or not :) I know I'd go nuts if I couldn't get to the internet for a prolonged period of time. Shows just how dependent I've become of the joys the fandoms bring me ^_^

Date: 2012-09-16 05:15 pm (UTC):( i'm sorry to hear that, bb. ugh, computers WHY WON'T YOU EVER WORK PROPERLY. but it does sound like buying a new one would end up being a lot cheaper in the long run. i don't know how it is in the US, but in finland, new laptop batteries always cost ridiculous amounts of money and it's not like they help all that much if the problem's more widespread than that.
could it be the hard drive, though? idk, it's unlikely i guess, but it's a thought, and they're not all that difficult to replace.
but here's to hoping you'll be able to get it fixed soon, though. a life without a proper computer is no life at all. *hugs*

Date: 2012-09-19 04:32 am (UTC)Thank you! I've called some computer repair shops, and I got the impression the part is pretty cheap - it's the labor that's going to kill me. I got a quote for $90 - $125. So I thank you for the offer, that's very kind of you ♥!, but obviously I'm not going to expect anyone to pay that for me.

Date: 2012-09-19 04:33 am (UTC)Thank you! I hope I can sort it out, too. It'd be nice to fix it without having to pay loads of money OR have to get a new laptop entirely.

Date: 2012-09-19 04:36 am (UTC)I'm so sorry to hear about your laptop :( I hope when it goes you find a way to replace it quickly - the world should not be deprived of your writing!

Date: 2012-09-19 04:37 am (UTC)I do, and I'm very lucky for that! Haha, I hear you there - I'm pretty dependent on fandom too, and I would go nuts if I had to go days without!

Date: 2012-09-19 04:41 am (UTC)I got a quote that fixing the problem will cost between $90 - $125. I'm just worried I'll spend that money getting it fixed and then it'll turn out to be a power flow problem or something. Batteries can be bought relatively cheap here, but it's finding one that's compatible with your computer...
We - the computer repairmen and I - feel it's probably the computer jack.
Thank you! I'm expecting to have the money to fix it mid-October. Hopefully my computer lasts just a little longer...

Date: 2012-09-19 04:43 am (UTC)Yeah, and the computer I'd be using is my mother's, so extra awkward! I'll have to curtail my fannish activities :( I have a Kindle, actually. I've loaded it up with SGA fic (and some miscellaneous fandom fic and books). But I should probably start thinking about dumping more onto it, just in case...
My main thing is missing out on all the new fic.
LOL NOBODY. FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS GO WITHOUT PORN. IT'S A RULE.

Date: 2012-09-19 05:22 am (UTC)I had a bad scare a few days ago--I got the blue screen of death and all kinds of dire warnings before it went dark. Fortunately, the IT BF was able to resuscitate it this time. I'll back it up, but I need to start saving my pennies for a new one.
Of course, this means I must
hunttrack down Joe Flanigan andmakeget him to sign the new one when I do...
