The Little Sister

Struggling to make it as a private investigator in post-war Los Angeles, John Sheppard doesn't have the luxury of turning away paying customers. All the same, he should have thought twice before he accepted a job from one Dr. Rodney McKay.

Okay, wow. Where to begin? This is a detective noir SGA/SG-1 AU set in Los Angeles. The time period is post-WWII in an 'verse where the goa'uld won millenia ago and Earth is a goa'uld theocracy run by Jaffa. The world building in this fic is amazing, both in terms of the time period and the way the Earth is ran while under goa'uld control - including the casual references to the goa'uld taking advantage of a well-known religion and co-opting it. It felt like a detective noir while at the same time being recognizably Stargate, and Martha manages to use damn near every character from SG-1 and SGA. The fic is heavy on plot and light on John/Rodney, in my opinion - although I think the John/Rodney is important to the overall plot of the fic, I wouldn't say it's really focused on. I love the way the author has woven all the characters together though, the way these two seemingly separate parts of John's life keep crossing over: John's relationship with Rodney and his investigation into the whereabouts of Elizabeth Weir. There's some graphic depictions of violence - including torture - so be aware of that. There's a sex scene as well, though I wouldn't say it's too explicit.

I'm not doing this fic justice. This is the fic you should read if you have ever wondered what would have happened if the goa'uld had managed to take over Earth thousands of years before the SGC was even thought of. You should read this if you love plot, action adventure, whump, and SG-1/SGA crossovers. It's not something to be missed.

I was captivated by the subtle world-building and how indoctrinated this earth was to Goa'uld rule. And of course I've a weakness for detective noir. :)

Now I need to go leave Martha a comment because I read this on my kindle and haven't left feedback yet. Thank you for the gentle reminder.

you love him so much
you would allow him
to drag you all the way to hell
if it meant you could
hold his hand
on the way down
