On a random impulse, I joined Goodreads. Friend me if you'd like, though I should warn you that my OCD demands I add every book I own to my Goodreads shelf. And that my taste in books is not the height of intellectual reading or even close to it.

I've tried listing my books in several places, but usually fail. Never seem to remember if I own a certain book, or have only read it :)

The only way I can do it is because I'm surrounded by my books. I just go through my shelves, book by book. The problem is I have so many - I have 200+ volumes of manga, alone.

I am over there as Sarah Madison and I sent you a friend request! I'm not there a lot. GR is an interesting place. Some of my LJ friends have migrated there from LJ, finding it a rich source of book discussions and general conversation.

I think without the common background of fandom,the discourse is a little less friendly at times than what I am used to. But maybe that's just me! I tend not to review very many books myself, but I do use it to track books I want to read. Maybe if I knew more people over there, I'd spend more time there!

Added you! I was just wondering if your books were up there or not. I'll have to check! I haven't found where the book discussions or general conversations are happening, but that's probably because I'm so new. Everything is shiny and weird at first!

That's really too bad :( I'm kind of sad that it's less friendly at times - but not everything can be like fandom. I don't plan to review a lot of books either - at most, I'll "rate" them. And it's a very handy place to have all the books I want to someday read - no longer will I make a list on a piece of notebook paper and then loose the list!

That's what I try to use it for--list keeping. I'll run across a non-mainstream title that looks interesting, but then forget to jot it down and never come across it again... I'm trying to do better at that!

I think part of the sense of unfriendliness I feel is due to the sheer size of some of the groups--in excess of 4-5 K members. it can be hard to get to know people on the kind of basis that you do on LJ. Also, there can be a lot of wank--I tend to stay away from hot button topic discussions, like whether women should write M/M romance, etc.

You should join the M/M Romance Group, though. It's free, and they have a lot of book discussions and a lot of free reads, giveaways, contests, etc.

My friend aadarshinah has been doing the 125 Things challenge, in which she recommends books everyone should read. It's making my "To Read" list grow larger, so I'm very grateful for Goodreads XD

That makes a lot of sense *nod* And I can see where those would be hot button topics, prone to arguments and such.

Hah, if you're worried about people finding you boring because of your reading list, wait til you see mine. I think I've only reviewed 6-7 books and I keep forgetting to come back and update when I've read something.

TBH, I don't utilize GR as well as I should, but as long as I can bookmark my book choices, I don't mind that I'm boring. :-)

Will check out your friend's list though-always in the market for stuff to read, even if the wallet is nearly empty...

I read a lot of romance novels, I've noticed. Not so much harlequin, where the romance drives the plot, but things like Iris Johansen and such XD I haven't really in-depth reviewed anything - most of the stuff I've read lately has been fanfiction, so I'm rating books and stuff based on how much I remember enjoying the book. But I'm really happy with the To Read shelf.

Another reason to join Goodreads - the ability to find new, interesting stuff!

That was interesting to me when I began to track what stories I wanted to review, read, etc. I *don't* read a lot of romance novels. I think that was why finding slash was a big deal for me--I was like *finally* adult romantic fiction! Most romance novels make me grit my teeth with their euphemisms and the way the heroine usually behaves so *stupidly* (or worse, is smart and tough until she falls in love, then she becomes incapable of crossing the street without assistance!) Then again, I stopped reading them for the most part a long time ago, for all I know, they've improved tremendously!


I've jokingly said one day I'd write the het story that I'd want to read--but I'm not sure anyone else would!

Aaaaand... you just caused me to spend a couple hours on that site. I have now set up an account, rated a few books, and will be going through and listing all the books I own(which is a LOT) at a later time.

LOL And another is drawn in! I've friended you back, of course. When I first joined, I spent a couple hours on that site too - it really sucks you in. I'm still in the process of listing all the books I've owned :P It's weirdly fun.
