[livejournal.com profile] bookshop has re-posted her locked McShep Primer, which is made up of awesome and kickass.

or maybe she allowed it to be re-posted, idk. either way it's back!

Awesome! I hadn't realized she'd locked it, but I'm glad it's available again. It's been a while since I revisited it. *refrains from the distraction* The only problem I had with this post is how much she calls the show stupid. I just. *hrmph*

Of course, now I'm trying to remember if [livejournal.com profile] bookshop is the one that wrote the post about the progression of their courtship based on the courtship rules found in a psychology book. *ponders*

The one post that's gone now that I wish were still around is "Czech Psychology and Tabula Rasa Meta", which used to be on the [livejournal.com profile] welovezelenka community. OMG that post and its ensuing commentary just floored me. It was all Zelenka-related, and it was made of SO MUCH WIN.

Are you talking about this post by winkingstar?

YESSSSSS. I'm sure I had it saved somewhere in my bookmarks, but I didn't even remember what it was called! So thank you!!! :-D I love that post ever so much.

And it's very sad that post is gone. :-( There was all this awesome meta and evidence that Zelenka had been in the Czech military and that he was a resistance fighter, all b/c of how Nykl played the role in that episode, and just. So much Zelenka love, it was beautiful. I miss it so!

Oh, if only I'd taken screencaps! I need to learn to take the time and do that sometimes, when it's really important, instead of just bookmarking and hoping I'll remember to come back to it. *le sigh*

They are simultaneously the most ridiculously dorky, aging, unattractive men, and the most inexplicably hot. And they have the, like, most RIDICULOUSLY OBNOXIOUS PERSONALITIES, except for how they're simultaneously COMPLETELY ADORKABLE and endearing

This is like the best way of describing McShep ever, even if I've got to agree with hoktauri about all the unnessicary down-putting of the series.

'tis the best way I've ever found, that's for sure. It's on my page-of-random-fandom quotes. At the top.

It's not so much the putting down of SGA (hell, I do it sometimes too), but the degree to which its done. It's like, yes, we get it already. Move on. But that might just be me.

i wouldn't have bought 4 seasons of SGA on dvd if I had thought "stupid" meant "bad." just saying!

I love this post more than words, but I concur with everyone else in this post who said the downputting of the show bothered them. I remember the first time I read it feeling...not just defensive of the show, but like I was being told WHAT to like and that if I did like the show, I was clearly inferior. I adore bookshop for so many reasons, but I also think she has a tendency to find fault with EVERYTHING and instead of acknowledging that everything is flawed, she focuses on what she doesn't like about it. I CLEARLY HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS.

I am strongly considering an SGA rewatch after I finish Buffy and Lost. STOP ME, MELISSA.

You find BSG well-written? I may have to rethink my opinion of you bb. :P

But seriously, ENCOURAGEMENT. SGA should be watched by all, oft and repeadly. JOIN THE GREAT SYFY REWATCH!

I do like how they manage to tie everything together, but the majority of S3 and the post-"Revelations" part of S4 disenchanted me with the series.

start a movement, huh? Hmmmm, IDK. for someone with so little to do I'm amazingly busy. granted, that's watching syfy mostly, but still...

like you'd start a meme, I guess: Just shout loud and often enough and hope someone hears you.

the end of BSG is very... gecko. The only parts of the finale I like are those that directly relate to Sam - particularly the flashback scenes. I think you'll know which ones I mean.

Oh, and tell me what you think about Starbuck when you finish. You'll know what I mean then too.

*pauses* I won't share my extensive feelings on Starbuck's ending until you've seen it. But Sam's flashbacks, talking about why he loves what he does, is just *brilliant* and I love them so much. Sam didn't really become a character for me until I'd seen the series all the way through.

IDK. I'm content with just posting my rewatch on my lj and letting people stumble across it. advertising it seems like too much work

I sorta fell in love with Sam's character after we found out he was one of the Final Five. Same with the Chief.

Gaius is one I hated consistently until the very, very end. He's far more sympathetic a character when I go back and watch.

Oh, I liked Chief from the begining, but i didn't fall in love with his character until S3.

Boomer I've always more or less disliked, though Athena's not so bad. Little schizo, but not so bad.

Gaius... well, let's just say he reminds me too much of a politican.

(Though I must also admit to a deep and abiding want of a BSG AU wherein the Final Five know they're Cylons all along. They, to me, are one of the most interesting plotlines in the series)

I can't listen to "All along the watchtower" the same way now.

I like that they had Sam direct the ships into the sun too - it really was the only thing for him - but Kara having been an angel for the entire S4 just rubs me the wrong way. It seems like a cop-out way of dealing with her issues with Sam and Lee.

I'm glad you enjoyed it though

Hi! I hope you don't mind my commenting (I realize I wasn't necessarily meant to see this so I apologize for any awkwardness that may result)!

Like I said above, I wouldn't have bought 4 seasons of the show if I equated "stupid" with "bad." I love stupid things. Ask me how many stupid movies about giant super-intelligent sea creatures I've consumed in my lifetime. Or how many eps of MST3K and Rifftrax. Or, god help me, bad YA paranormals. I really love things I think are stupid, haha.

But I'm not going to act like I think a show is smart when I don't. In that post, I was trying to balance my own mockery of the show with self-mockery for enjoying a show I think is dumb and genuine enthusiasm for said show, and for the fandom. I included a lot of information on the actual eps, which was something lots of people tended to leave out of their primers for the series, because to me the episodes have a HUGE effect on how you read the characters and how you enjoy the show. You can't, for example, really get much nuance out of Shep's character before you've seen the S1 finale where he goes all psycho on Kolya and kills like 30 people at once, for example. And there are so many eps that I unironically love, especially from S3 and S4. So many!

re: what you said about how I focus too much on the flaws--oh, I absolutely, absolutely am aware, and try to acknowledge, that everything is flawed. And I was a professional theatre critic for three years, as well as an editor for many years, so I am really attuned to picking out flaws as well as positives. But I think the basic thing about me is that I honestly just don't wholeheartedly love a lot of things. When I do, when I really love something, I have nothing but joy in it and overwhelming effusive praise. (You can see what that looks like if you check the primer immediately below it, another old backdated primer for Prince of Tennis. (Which is also really silly and awesome.) Namely, it looks like 7 posts of tl;dr let-me-tell-you-how-much-i-love-this-thing-here's-a-picspam.)

I was never in SGA fandom. I read fic for years on the sidelines, I bought the episodes out of fondness and because I like stupid things, and SGA is a stupid thing that makes me really happy! But I don't love SGA the way I love fandoms I've actually been active in. Maybe that's the simple difference. There just aren't a lot of things that I love. But there are a lot of things I really, really enjoy--and part of what I enjoy about things is being able to critique them and analyze them, and/or poke fun at them, and myself, and fandom. So that's what you got in this post.

All that said--all my opinions and observations are just my opinions and observations, and are never intended to be constrictive or prostrictive. And certainly never to make you or anyone feel like you're doing fandom wrong.

I just read Until She Shines by Verity/[livejournal.com profile] ladyofthelog, & in the A/N zie says zie based the AU's look at "Echos" directly on [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's description in the McShep Primer. Maybe that's why it's reposted? In any case the primer is a hoot!
