Awesome! I hadn't realized she'd locked it, but I'm glad it's available again. It's been a while since I revisited it. *refrains from the distraction* The only problem I had with this post is how much she calls the show stupid. I just. *hrmph*
Of course, now I'm trying to remember if bookshop is the one that wrote the post about the progression of their courtship based on the courtship rules found in a psychology book. *ponders*
The one post that's gone now that I wish were still around is "Czech Psychology and Tabula Rasa Meta", which used to be on the welovezelenka community. OMG that post and its ensuing commentary just floored me. It was all Zelenka-related, and it was made of SO MUCH WIN.
I only realized she locked it when I went to link to it over at my McShep tumblr. I was extremely disappointed. Now that it's unlocked, I am taking no chances and have kept a copy :D
The only problem I had with this post is how much she calls the show stupid. I just. *hrmph*
A surprising number of people have felt this way, sadly. I remember reading this one girl confess that she watches the show only so she can be a part of the fandom - she doesn't care for the episodes, but she needs to know what's going on so she can better understand the fics. Another girl I met said she hasn't seen a single episode, she just loves the fic.
I love the show. I think the show and the fic just make each other better together.

IT'S NOT AROUND ANYMORE? I am bitterly disappointed by this. I'd love to read it.
YESSSSSS. I'm sure I had it saved somewhere in my bookmarks, but I didn't even remember what it was called! So thank you!!! :-D I love that post ever so much.
And it's very sad that post is gone. :-( There was all this awesome meta and evidence that Zelenka had been in the Czech military and that he was a resistance fighter, all b/c of how Nykl played the role in that episode, and just. So much Zelenka love, it was beautiful. I miss it so!
You're so welcome :D I'm just glad I could find it so quickly XD
"There was all this awesome meta and evidence that Zelenka had been in the Czech military and that he was a resistance fighter, all b/c of how Nykl played the role in that episode..."
It makes me really sad that the post isn't there anymore. I'd try and use the way back machine to find it, but that site doesn't work on LJ, I think :(
Oh, if only I'd taken screencaps! I need to learn to take the time and do that sometimes, when it's really important, instead of just bookmarking and hoping I'll remember to come back to it. *le sigh*
I've lost posts before because the poster friend-locked or deleted their account. It *sucks* - it's why I have copies saved to my google documents of various fics/posts.
They are simultaneously the most ridiculously dorky, aging, unattractive men, and the most inexplicably hot. And they have the, like, most RIDICULOUSLY OBNOXIOUS PERSONALITIES, except for how they're simultaneously COMPLETELY ADORKABLE and endearing
This is like the best way of describing McShep ever, even if I've got to agree with hoktauri about all the unnessicary down-putting of the series.
This is like the best way of describing McShep ever..."
It's pretty much perfect, isn't it? Couldn't have said it better XD
I've got to agree with hoktauri about all the unnessicary down-putting of the series.
Like I told hoktauri, this really doesn't surprise me - I've run into this sentiment before. Some people are really only interested in the fandom, and want no part of the show itself (or only watch to better enhance their fandom experience). I think it's ridiculous, because I love the show a stupid amount, campy though it may be.
But yeah, the put downs about the show make me upset and defensive.
'tis the best way I've ever found, that's for sure. It's on my page-of-random-fandom quotes. At the top.
It's not so much the putting down of SGA (hell, I do it sometimes too), but the degree to which its done. It's like, yes, we get it already. Move on. But that might just be me.

Ooo, I love that you added it to your quotes collection XD
I guess she didn't want anybody who gave the show a try to accuse her of leading them into thinking the show was fantastic? IDK. Your right, she does sort of belabor the point.
I love this post more than words, but I concur with everyone else in this post who said the downputting of the show bothered them. I remember the first time I read it feeling...not just defensive of the show, but like I was being told WHAT to like and that if I did like the show, I was clearly inferior. I adore bookshop for so many reasons, but I also think she has a tendency to find fault with EVERYTHING and instead of acknowledging that everything is flawed, she focuses on what she doesn't like about it. I CLEARLY HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS.
I am strongly considering an SGA rewatch after I finish Buffy and Lost. STOP ME, MELISSA.
Yeah, I know what you mean. And I'm glad the show isn't perfect, but the shows that I find extremely well-written - like Castle or Battlestar Galactica - those I feel no urge to read fic for. The Castle/Beckett relationship is handled pretty damn well on the show, no need for fic. So I'm glad SGA has flaws, I only wish bookshop could have focused less on them.
I am strongly considering an SGA rewatch after I finish Buffy and Lost. STOP ME, MELISSA.
OH BB. YOU KNOW YOU'VE COME TO THE WRONG PLACE IF YOU WANT TO BE STOPPED. I WISH TO ENCOURAGE YOU: Think of John and Rodney, and all the little moments that make the pairing and show great :)
*nod* I do, yep. Definitely not perfect, but it's pretty interesting how there are repeated themes and how they fit certain things together. And they've managed to genuinely surprise me, despite the fact that I repeatedly tell myself that pretty much anything goes.
like you'd start a meme, I guess: Just shout loud and often enough and hope someone hears you.
the end of BSG is very... gecko. The only parts of the finale I like are those that directly relate to Sam - particularly the flashback scenes. I think you'll know which ones I mean.
Oh, and tell me what you think about Starbuck when you finish. You'll know what I mean then too.
You could probably post notices to various comms too - BSG comms, Stargate ones, etc.
My heart breaks for Sam :( He's comatose unless he's plugged in ;________; I watched Daybreak Part 1 today, and Sam had a flashback about what he enjoys about his sport.
Starbuck...I have no idea what's up with Starbuck. She's dead but not? IDEK. I'm very eager to find out what the hell is going on with her :P
*pauses* I won't share my extensive feelings on Starbuck's ending until you've seen it. But Sam's flashbacks, talking about why he loves what he does, is just *brilliant* and I love them so much. Sam didn't really become a character for me until I'd seen the series all the way through.
IDK. I'm content with just posting my rewatch on my lj and letting people stumble across it. advertising it seems like too much work
Sam didn't really become a character for me until I'd seen the series all the way through.
I was initially meh about him, though he did grow on me. I like him, and I think throughout the course of the show that never really changed. (Unlike my feelings for Starbuck, Lee, or Gaius - those I flip flopped on a lot.)
I'm much too lazy to advertise too :P It's why I'm a terrible LJ correspondent - I get so lazy and then don't respond to comments until days later.
Ah, see - I've loved Chief from the beginning. I'm not sure why, I was just very fond of him. Sam grew on me.
Gaius...he's made me angry, and he's frustrated me, but I can't say I ever really hated him. Dislike him, maybe, certainly after New Caprica and when he and D'Anna sort of shut Caprica Six out.
Boomer, however - my dislike for her has been steadily growing. I felt so bad for her at first, but she keeps making choices that hurt characters I really like.
Oh, I liked Chief from the begining, but i didn't fall in love with his character until S3.
Boomer I've always more or less disliked, though Athena's not so bad. Little schizo, but not so bad.
Gaius... well, let's just say he reminds me too much of a politican.
(Though I must also admit to a deep and abiding want of a BSG AU wherein the Final Five know they're Cylons all along. They, to me, are one of the most interesting plotlines in the series)
It was...wow. I admit to crying a bit :P I find it interesting that Chief strangled Tory for killing his wife - they were together in another life. And it made sense to have Sam direct the ships into the sun - they wanted a clean slate, and Sam wouldn't survive in the simple life the human race was going to live. I didn't like that all the characters I loved split up - Chief going off on his own, Papa Adama living by himself, Kara is dead and Helo and Athena...they weren't living on their own, I know, but I kind of wanted all the familiar characters to stay in one area.
I do love the ending though, where it showed "modern times", and had the original All Along The Watchtower playing :P
I can't listen to "All along the watchtower" the same way now.
I like that they had Sam direct the ships into the sun too - it really was the only thing for him - but Kara having been an angel for the entire S4 just rubs me the wrong way. It seems like a cop-out way of dealing with her issues with Sam and Lee.
Hi! I hope you don't mind my commenting (I realize I wasn't necessarily meant to see this so I apologize for any awkwardness that may result)!
Like I said above, I wouldn't have bought 4 seasons of the show if I equated "stupid" with "bad." I love stupid things. Ask me how many stupid movies about giant super-intelligent sea creatures I've consumed in my lifetime. Or how many eps of MST3K and Rifftrax. Or, god help me, bad YA paranormals. I really love things I think are stupid, haha.
But I'm not going to act like I think a show is smart when I don't. In that post, I was trying to balance my own mockery of the show with self-mockery for enjoying a show I think is dumb and genuine enthusiasm for said show, and for the fandom. I included a lot of information on the actual eps, which was something lots of people tended to leave out of their primers for the series, because to me the episodes have a HUGE effect on how you read the characters and how you enjoy the show. You can't, for example, really get much nuance out of Shep's character before you've seen the S1 finale where he goes all psycho on Kolya and kills like 30 people at once, for example. And there are so many eps that I unironically love, especially from S3 and S4. So many!
re: what you said about how I focus too much on the flaws--oh, I absolutely, absolutely am aware, and try to acknowledge, that everything is flawed. And I was a professional theatre critic for three years, as well as an editor for many years, so I am really attuned to picking out flaws as well as positives. But I think the basic thing about me is that I honestly just don't wholeheartedly love a lot of things. When I do, when I really love something, I have nothing but joy in it and overwhelming effusive praise. (You can see what that looks like if you check the primer immediately below it, another old backdated primer for Prince of Tennis. (Which is also really silly and awesome.) Namely, it looks like 7 posts of tl;dr let-me-tell-you-how-much-i-love-this-thing-here's-a-picspam.)
I was never in SGA fandom. I read fic for years on the sidelines, I bought the episodes out of fondness and because I like stupid things, and SGA is a stupid thing that makes me really happy! But I don't love SGA the way I love fandoms I've actually been active in. Maybe that's the simple difference. There just aren't a lot of things that I love. But there are a lot of things I really, really enjoy--and part of what I enjoy about things is being able to critique them and analyze them, and/or poke fun at them, and myself, and fandom. So that's what you got in this post.
All that said--all my opinions and observations are just my opinions and observations, and are never intended to be constrictive or prostrictive. And certainly never to make you or anyone feel like you're doing fandom wrong.
I just read Until She Shines by Verity/ladyofthelog, & in the A/N zie says zie based the AU's look at "Echos" directly on bookshop's description in the McShep Primer. Maybe that's why it's reposted? In any case the primer is a hoot!
Oh, that very well could be! It may be that the posting of that fic meant that bookshop was getting a lot of requests to view the entry, so she had it re-posted.
my dear the problem is that you love him so much you would allow him to drag you all the way to hell if it meant you could hold his hand on the way down
