Was reading a fic and was hit upside the head with a random thought:

Was John ever shown to fight using hand-to-hand combat? All that training with Ronon and Teyla, and I seriously can't recall him ever doing anything other than firing a P-90 and running. Not that those are bad things, I heartily approve of  them (the Flan is gorgeous no matter what), but I'd like to see some hand-to-hand combat. How hot would that be? Mmm.

i don't know. why don't i know. i should know this. but uh. aside from his training with ronon and teyla, no, i don't think so. i'm not sure, but somehow i've got no recollection of john fighting anyone else hand-to-hand. perhaps some random scuffles when john's lost his gun, but i don't really count those. ('cause i don't count the little bit in 3.07 common ground, and that's basically as good as it gets, i think.)

WHY IS THERE NONE.

or perhaps there's been loads of it, but it's been so hot that i've blocked it from my mind because otherwise i'd be dead from the awesome. or something. :D

I think there's been a little hand-to-hand in some of the fics I've read in the past. Mostly, that was practicing against Ronon or Teyla, like you said, but in a few epic h/c fics John's been in some tight situations. Hmm… I'll have to get back to you on that one.

As far as show-wise, I believe that to make the rank of Major in the Air Force, you need to be proficient at several levels of fighting, including hand-to-hand. There's an ep in SG-1 where Sam (she's the only girl in SG-1, and moves up to the 'major' rank fairly quickly) can't remember if you've started watching that one yet is on a planet where women are still not allowed much in the way of rights at all, and she challenges the leaders and ends up needing to fight without weapons. I remember her bickering with Jack about her skills, and how she got upset when he implied she might not be able to win. Then, she cites that little bit of info, and for some reason it lodged in my brain. XD So, yeah. Sorry for the way-too-long rant, but as far as I know they need to master those skills before getting promoted.

Btw, I heartily approve of these random thoughts of yours. *nods* Very good for my inner fangirl. :D
