School sucks, and is sucking out my soul. Slowly. In the last week of May, I'll be pretty much Zombified because of finals, numerous papers I've got to write, and a board game to create. =.= BUT THEN IT'S SUMMER VACATION~ THREE MONTHS OF VACATION.
I read the manga Skip Beat, and I adored it! You should check out this post to learn more about it -- and perhaps even read it? The fandom is small, but I'd love to have a friend to fangirl over it with. I've seen the anime, and I liked that too (though the manga is much better. The anime ends very, very abruptly).
I really recommend Skip Beat -- the fandom has zero yaoi, but the main het pairing is so awesome that I don't care.Yoshiki Nakamura's manga are more plot than romance; the development of the characters comes first. The characters don't immediately fall in love, and with scenes like this (the more Ren sparkles, the angrier he actually is, hence Kyoko's reaction), and sound effects like "pudding", you'll be giggling and cheering Kyouko on! According to One Manga, the same author who does Skip Beat doesTokyo Crazy Paradise, which I've read before and recommend if you're not looking for a lighthearted series. It had me sobbing. Some of the pages aren't translated either (though what's going on is still understandable). The artwork isn't the prettiest in TCP, but it's not something you'd want to give your eyes away over.
*wills herself not to talk of her favorite manga series*
I'm reading The Dresden Files, a good series with an awesomely grumpy main character. He's also quite hilarious -- one of my favorite parts so far is when the main character, Harry, gets a concussion and answers his phone to find a woman he had met earlier in the chapter on the other end. She starts talking to him, but the first words out of his mouth are, "Are you naked?" It led me to discover that trying to suppress laughter means you'll make odd snorting noises.
I think there was something else I wanted to say, but I can't remember now. Oh well, must not have been important.

Date: 2009-04-18 11:12 am (UTC)The Dresden Files, for all their faults, are really fun books. Wait till you get to the Tibetan temple dog and the army of zombies. Good times, goood times.

Date: 2009-04-19 12:17 am (UTC)Temple dogs and zombie armies, huh? Sounds like a blast! I'm on the third book now, and I can't wait to get to the parts you just mentioned!

Date: 2009-04-18 03:00 pm (UTC)I actually got all excited when I read this because I love Skip Beat, and the fandom is pretty small. It took me a while to like Kyoko, but the other characters are so awesome I didn't really care, and I'm totally cheering her on now XD It's been so long that I've been into a shoujo manga that the style is really refreshing, too. *Breaks out Yashiro icon in celebration*
I haven't read TCP (the initials remind me of that stuff you gargle) but I don't think I could handle anything non-light at the moment, so maybe another time XD

Date: 2009-04-19 12:32 am (UTC)YOU KNOW SKIP BEAT? Ahhhh, I'm so happy to have a friend that knows it. I liked Kyouko from the beginning, though when she gets in "Revenge Mode" I tend to get "eh" about her. But she's hilarious, and so are the other characters (like the Presdent, LOL). I joined the only Skip Beat community on LJ, and I went through it for its fanfiction. It really is tiny (which is okay, the series is so great that I don't actually feel the need for loads of fanfiction). s;akjfas Yashiro! Such a Kyouko/Ren shipper ♥ I have a few SB icons, but none on LJ yet. I'll have to change that!
LOL It reminds me of that drug, PCP. Long title is too long to type out for lazy me. Yeah, it's got light moments, but it's not really a "light" series, especially later on...

Date: 2009-04-19 01:24 pm (UTC)YESSS ♥ I saw some of the anime just before the holiday, and I've been reading the manga in my spare time. It wasn't so much that I disliked her, but I think I started appreciating her more after the audition for the commercial. She is hilarious and OMG the President is aksfladskl genius XD Yashiro's just awesome, lol, and he is definitely a Kyouko/Ren shipper XD It's just frustrating how long it takes for new chapters to come out. Especially when someone is taking a weeks break when everything's so tense and argh *critical case of OP withdrawal*
PCP makes me think of the song by Manic Street Preachers. I should probably stop with the word association now. It does looks good, but I'd probably have to be in the right mood to read it.

Date: 2009-04-20 02:57 am (UTC)XDDD Kyouko was meant to be an actress, I think. She tries so hard, and she's got talent. If only she could block Fuwa Sho from her mind...I LOVE THE PRESIDENT. He's such a weirdo, it's hilarious. I don't know how much of the manga you've read, so I don't want to spoil anything...but have you read about the "Thank You" party? If you have, then you'll know what I'm talking about. ^___________^ Yashiro deserves more love than he gets. He's such a cutie ♥ I KNOOOOW T_T Of course, Skip Beat chapters are generally longer than normal chapters, so that sort of makes up for it...*suffers from OP withdrawal too* Luckily I'm also watching the anime....
LOL I Have no idea who they are. Yeah, I wouldn't read it if you're already depressed.

Date: 2009-04-20 11:42 am (UTC)I think so, too. It was the Fuwa Sho obsession that put me off at first, I think. LOL I have read that bit XD He's such a... unique character XD Yashiro needs his own fanclub, maybe ♥ I love how dry he sounds, but he genuinely cares about Ren, and Kyouko too. That's true, longer chapters are definitely a good thing.
lol they're an eclectic Welsh alternative rock band, one of my favourites

Date: 2009-04-25 07:33 am (UTC)I didn't like how Fuwa could instantly effect Kyouko like that, especially when she has a great guy like Ren that cares about her. But then again, I've never devoted my life to a guy and had him stomp all over my heart, so what would I know? YES. Yashiro deserves all the love he can get, I want to kidnap him and cuddle all day (even more so than I want to with the President, who is such wacky love ♥, and Ren).
I....see. No wonder I know nothing about them. Also, your icon is made of win

Date: 2009-04-18 05:24 pm (UTC)Haha, that it does. I think that it's designed to drain you in the short few years you attend. >_> It's a conspiracy to wipe us out.
Yay! Another one to add to my "to read/watch list" :D Although, it's getting kinda long… hmmm.
*wonders which manga series that would be* XD Hard to guess which, I think. ;)
I watched Dresden Files for a few episodes (it aired on Spike for awhile a few years back) but I didn't really get into it.
<3
I love your icon
Date: 2009-04-19 12:23 am (UTC)To weed out the weak ones, I suppose. But I will persevere! *strikes a pose*
I hope you like them, when you get around to reading them! I don't have anything on my To Read List, but my "To Watch" list is full of tv shows and anime that I haven't gotten around too >.<
LOL So hard to tell~ I mean, it's not like I go on and on about one particular series. *innocent look*
The books are very different from the tv show, from what I've read. Character designs were changed and some characters in the books only show up briefly in the tv show. But if you didn't like it, you didn't like it :)
♥
Re: I love your icon
Date: 2009-04-21 02:32 pm (UTC)*squeezes the life outta you* I MISS YOOOOU! *flails* I'm going back to college in the fall (took a year off) and I can't wait! :D Mostly though, I think I can't wait until I don't need to work. Full-time student means I won't have any time, and that's fine with me. I think the only work I'd like is work that pertains to my major.
XD Oh, definitely. *snaps a pic* Hah! Blackmail ;)
I know. My List is entirely too long. *glares at it* But I wanna see them all, dammit! *pouts* Stupid RL.
Pfft, you're not fooling me missy. *glances at journal background* That's what I thought. *ahem*
Are they? Usually the tv series differ from the books (and the movies as well, ugh. Drives me crazy. >_>) but I haven't read them, so I can't really compare. I think I'll take a look at those. :) You never know, the book might be more interesting. Not that I'm a bookworm or anything. *cough*
There's a series now on tv that is from one of my favorite books, and it's really making me mad. They're varying from the plot so bad, that whenever me and my dad watch it, we just look at it as "loosly based" on the novel. The book was so good, though! Why, why, why can't they just keep it the same?! *throws hands up in defeat* Oh, in case you're interested, the series is called Legend of the Seeker. XD
Okay, done rambling for now. ;) Love you sweetie!
<333
Re: I love your icon
Date: 2009-04-22 05:53 pm (UTC)Congrats on returning to college! Now you get to complain about classes with the rest of us :) Yeah, going to school is definitely better than working =.= Do you know what classes you're going to take?
OH NOES, BLACKMAIL? I'LL DO WHATEVER YOU WANT, JUST DON'T RELEASE THE PICTURE.
Oh, me too! Summer vacation is coming up soon for me though, so I'll have all the time in the world.
*shifty eyes* B-but I'm telling the truth! I don't have an Ultimate OTP.
Mm, sometimes it's good that the movies/tv shows are different. Oh, please do give the books a try! If they're still not to your taste, then you can say you at least tried! *cough* No, no bookworms here >_>
LOL I was planning on asking what series. So...I should read the books, then? I don't understand why people base things "loosely" on a book. If the book is so awesome that a movie is being made of it, stay true to the awesome book!
LOVE YOU TOO.
Re: I love your icon
Date: 2009-04-24 07:42 pm (UTC)Haha, yeah. I get to join the hordes of people in boo-ing homework and complaining about my teachers. :D I can't wait. XD I'm gonna be an english major, and probably narrow it down from there. ;) Haven't thought that far ahead yet.
Whatever I want, hmmm? *rubs hands together evilly* This will be fun… *evil cackle*
Summer! *dances* Probably my favorite season. :D 'Cept for the bugs. *shudder*
Yeah, sure you are. *nodnod* I believe it.
It can be a good thing, but in my experience it's not. :( I will try! When I find them, though. Maybe I'll try the library…
Hah! Mindreader. *smirks* The show is Legend of the Seeker. The book series is the Sword of Truth, by Terry Goodkind. Fantasy-fiction. AWESOME-SAUCE. I don't understand it either! When something is amazing, don't deviate!! Grrr, movie-people make me mad sometimes. THIS is why the author should be on set! Of course, if they're dead, then it's understandable. XD Unless you're a median, then you have no excuse. ;)
MUAH! <3
Re: I love your icon
Date: 2009-05-08 07:24 am (UTC)You sound...sort of excited to be joining the mass of people complaining of schoolwork. My semester just ended, so I'm finally free~ It's a nice feeling.
YES, WHATEVER YOU WANT.
Ugh, I hate bugs. Though I do like the warmer weather, compared to winter. Though spring is my favorite season.
I convinced you? *disbelief* I mean, yeah, of course I did! For I am the Great
UssopMelissa-sama!Mm, I feel sort of bad for urging you to read the books. =.= If you don't like it, then you don't like it.
*Writes that down* I'll definitely have to see if I can find it! It sounds pretty good *nod* EXACTLY. It's considered good for a reason. I wonder what goes through their mind when they change things? Perhaps, "I wonder how I can screw up this masterpiece?" They have to know what they're doing. Mm, I think if they're dead that's one excuse -- nobody's around to tell them how the characters are deep inside, and all that.
(^3^)

Date: 2009-05-10 07:08 pm (UTC)Bugs are evil. Especially mosquitoes and spiders. >_< Yuck!
Don't feel bad! I love reading new books. I just need to add it to my list, since I don't go to the public library too often. I won't know if I like it until I try it~ ;)
I think they decide that they would do certain parts differently, and without the author around they feel free to tweak it to their satisfaction. *grumbles* Stupid people make me mad. >_>
Muah <3333

Date: 2009-05-18 07:32 am (UTC)YES! Those two bugs are my least favorite. *shakes fist*
I have no idea where I'd be without new books to read. They're a life saver. :D Well, I hope you do like it, though if it turns out that you don't, that's fine too!
That's probably it. It's just not fair! And some books that don't deserve to be made into a movie are *coughTWILIGHTcough*

Date: 2009-04-18 07:05 pm (UTC)Skip Beat, huh? Hm, might take a look at it (though I must confess that the extremely shoujo artwork made me reel back a bit. I got so used to the new look on CLAMP'S works that I lost touch with more traditional depictions... )
no subject
Date: 2009-04-19 12:27 am (UTC)It's a great series. I wasn't expecting to like it so much, since all shoujo series tend to be really similar. XD (Haha, yeah Clamp definitely doesn't have the traditional shoujo artwork style. Though they do still draw some of the characters eyes pretty large...)

No, please don't tempt me into another fandom... I'm having trouble as it is with all my Reborn! Kuroshitsuji! APH! Blood+! Saiyuki! Clamp and its mindfucks! Random jdramas and London Hearts! And of course, One Piece's awesomeness of doom.
I swear I've forgotten a fandom in there. And to think I was exclusively One Piece this time last year...

I'm sorry~ That's quite a list of fandoms you got there! Repeat to yourself, "I will not be swayed by your sweet words of temptation." Hopefully that will prevent you from getting to know the awesomeness that is Skip Beat.
What I said just defeats the purpose of that quote.LOL You've grown so much as a fangirl! *is proud* I hope you stay true to your roots, as it were, and don't abandon OP forever T_T
