There's sometimes a short grace period after expiry when you can pay and reinstate a site. Fanlore lists a bunch of past founders and archivists. I'm gonna PM them to see if any of them know.

Taste_is_sweet was funding the old domain but says Alyse and Temaris were doing the move to AO3 and no idea what happened to that. But Alyse was no longer involoved, other than knowing that new address. Very odd!

Can stuff be saved from the wayback machine?

Yes, looks like. I just chased a wraithbait link to a fic, and it was there on Wayback. The fic was multi-chapter and it opened out into the full fic when I clicked on the "story" option. The fic was also "adult themes" and there were no barriers to accessing it. So fingers crossed.

I tried to do the same with Kalimrye's (?) Environrmntal Controls and the whole story option didnt work and the 2nd chapter hadnt been captured :(

I wouldn't hold my breath for AO3 unfortunately. Back in 2017 I reached out to Open Doors to ask if they could grab Wraithbait too. They explained that they needed mod approval, which makes sense, so I reached out to the Wraithbait mods.

The Wraithbait mods said they were waiting for Open Doors' approval, meanwhile Open Doors told me they were waiting for consent.
