Evil Author Day Post 3
Feb. 15th, 2013 11:37 pmTitle: Harlequin AU
Notes: I was writing this unofficially for the Harlequin Big Bang, and then I started hitting some snags.

Jeannie raised her chin in the trademark McKay manner. "I know it's not a subject you like to discuss, but -"
"Oh god, not you too," Rodney moaned, and he raised one hand to cover his eyes.
"I just want to see you happy, Mer, and they can help with that." Jeannie continued, stubbornly.
"Not that it's any of your business, but if I want to find my...my soulmate or whatever, then I'll start looking on my own. I don't need some company giving me a name and - I wouldn't just accept that, how would they know, what method do they use -"
"You know as well as I do that Pegasus Corp has a 100% success rate," Jeannie interrupted. "What's the harm in trying?"
"It creates expectations!" Rodney said, more loudly than intended. The people nearest turned to look and Rodney glared them into looking away. "Look. When you give someone a piece of paper with the name of their soulmate -"
"Match," Jeannie interrupted again.
" - or Match, whatever, it creates this expectation that the two of you are meant to be together. You think you should fall in love and get married, so you do. Would you have married Kaleb if you hadn't gotten his name from Pegasus Corp? Who knows!" Rodney raised his voice to speak over and offended Jeannie. "I know you think you would still love him, but we can't know that because it's already too late, the idea that he's your Match has been planted in your head."
"I don't believe any of that!" Jeannie argued. "They give you the name of the person you're most compatible with because they're your Match. They don't become your Match because Pegasus says so, they already are, and Pegasus is the message delivery."
"How does Pegasus discover this information? Why are they so secretive about it?" Rodney wanted to know.
"Because other companies could use the same method and cut into their profits!" Jeannie snapped.
"I'm a scientist, Jeannie! I'm not going to believe everything I'm told without proof," Rodney said.
"There is proof. Everyone who has ever gone to Pegasus and met their Match has formed a happy, healthy, and satisfying relationship!"
"So? That's just what we hear, there's bound to be some failures we don't know about."
"If there were, don't you think the news would be all over it?" Jeannie demanded. Rodney crossed his arms over his chest and raised his chin stubbornly. He loved his sister, he did, but ever since she'd gone to that damn company and used their services she'd been all about falling in love and being happy. Like Rodney wasn't happy where he was now! The only thing that would make him happier at this point in his life would be more sex, which he could get without the committment Pegasus offered to some idiot whose name happens to pop out as Rodney's Match.
