au in which bug!john goes hunting for his mate

“Doctor McKay!” The voice over the radio was breathless and frantic. Rodney went tense. “Major Sheppard has escaped and he’s looking for you!”

Rodney felt his eyes go wide, felt his body go cold. Normally the prospect of seeing John was one he looked forward to, but with John’s mental capacities affected by his mutating DNA…well. The last time they had met, John had to be dragged away, screeching and clicking and fighting.

“Doctor McKay! You must find someplace safe. The marines are heading to intercept him, but -“

Rodney abandoned his lab, already on the move. He had the perfect place in mind.

Rodney should have known John would find him. He’d never been able to hide from John, though he suspected that usually had more to do with his connection to Atlantis than the method used this time.

John shoved Rodney against the wall roughly. Rodney grimaced, the impact sending a sharp stab of pain in his back. John held him firmly in place, fingers curled around Rodney’s arms, claws pressing just so against Rodney’s skin. John’s slitted eyes were alarmingly large from this close. He stared contemplatively at Rodney for a moment, the intensity of his gaze making Rodney quiver.

John leaned in.

John Sheppard is the only live-in bodyguard Rodney McKay’s ever had that’s lasted longer than two weeks. McKay has a nasty habit of getting caught up in the excitement of his work and taking off with only a vague note (‘going to meet some monkeys’) to hint at his whereabouts, making him an easy target.

John always finds his man, and soon it’s well known that you do not abduct or harm Rodney McKay - it isn’t safe. Not for anyone.
