☆ Number One:

→ He's sarcastic

I admit freely to being a fan of sarcasm. And Rodney wields sarcasm like a samurai would a sword: lethally and with talent. He even puts his body language into it, making it quite clear how he feels. People who say sarcasm is the lowest form of wit don't know what they're talking about. Sarcasm goes right over some people's heads, so how can it be the lowest form?

 

John: [the sensors have discovered a powerful energy field] You Think it's worth checking out?

Rodney: Any significant energy emission generally indicates technological civilization.
John: So...you think it's worth checking out?
Rodney: I'm sorry. Yes. Energy field good.

☆ Number Two
→ He cares about his team and his people
Rodney repeatedly risks his life for the people of Atlantis. In the first season, we learn that in an alternate timeline, Rodney spent the last moments of his life working desperately to get his people to safety. He stepped in front of a loaded weapon to protect Elizabeth Weir, has gone on rescue missions despite being a civilian scientist. He offered to accompany John to his father's funeral, despite social interaction being a weakness. In season five, Rodney spent years of his life dedicated to getting John Sheppard home, to alter the timeline and save his friends.

Rodney: You see, the thing is, Col. Sheppard and I have sorta gotten into this habit of saving each other’s lives and it's my turn.

 

☆ Number Three
→ He's brave.
In season one, Rodney steps into an energy creature with nothing but a personal shield to protect him. He had no idea how long the shield would last, but he knew that if he didn't do it, people would die. The fact that Rodney is frequently terrified -- about everything - but travels to alien worlds, meets strange people, risks his precious brain, shows that he's brave. As one version of a popular saying goes, "Bravery is not the absence of fear, but the will to overcome it." And Rodney so does.

         Rodney: “Okay, you can take them out, easy. Just a few well-placed karate chops and, and, and, and down they go. Piece of cake.”

☆ Number Four
→ He's intelligent
That intelligence comes with arrogance, but a lot of the time he is one of the few things standing between his people and death. His arrogance is deserved, and you know what? Smart is sexy as hell. He's the self-proclaimed smartest man in two galaxies, and Sam Carter aside, he's most likely right. Rodney's the foremost expert in ancient technology; he was an expert on the Stargate before he had even had the chance to view one.

Rodney: "Okay, I've already worked out the basic plan. I mean, the details will be a bit more complicated. I'll probably have to create a whole new form of math just to do the calculations, but I know I can do it."

☆ Number Five
→ He's adorable
Rodney's a big geek. He loves Doctor Who and Batman, he argues with John over supervillains and superheroes. He has the best woobie face ever and makes geeky jokes that really only John understand. He has a hard time with social interaction, says the wrong thing at the wrong time, but he tries so hard for his team. He wears bright, eye-searing orange fleece, which is only a small part of his terrible fashion sense (plaid pants, Rodney? Really?).

Rodney [to an alien]: "Unfortunately, the computer froze. It was completely locked up. Probably should have used a Mac."

On an entirely shallow note, how did I never notice his calves before in that picture? O_O

But yes, so much THIS. To EVERYTHING. I just love how, watching the show, you see that underneath all of Rodney's brilliance and prickly attitude is someone who cares very deeply about the people around him, and will run enormous risks to protect them. <333

IKR, Rodney grows on you. I know if I go too long without reading fic, I start missing him. Is that weird?

nngh, yes. There's something so hot about that picture, but I cant' put my finger on what. His calves are part of it, definitely.

I love that in SG-1 he was just this shallow, sexist guy who hit on Samantha Carter. And then in SGA he gets character development, depth, a well-roundedness that makes him a likable character.

hee, not at all! you've got to have your regular dose of characters you love, right? :D it's totally the same with me - i get that with loads of shows, like sga & spn & merlin & sherlock & inception & now, recently, h50.

but idk, there's just something special about sga. maybe it's because i fell in love with it from the first minute, or because i've been a fan of it for some years now, or maybe plainly just because i've not rewatched it for some time, and i miss it. but the fact is, sga always makes me feel all fuzzy and giggly and utterly, utterly fangirly. doesn't get any better than that, eh? :D

I suppose it's like that with any person you like. You want to see or be around them every so often because you miss them :)

I can't thank you enough for getting me into SGA. It's been my best fandom experience in the 10 years I've been involved in fandom. It's always nice to have a show that makes you feel warm & fuzzy. It's a comforting thing!

hee, no, i don't have a tumblr. it's actually one of the very few things i've been able to resist, mostly because i've yet to get stuck rifling through all the pretty pictures everyone's always posting.

is it one of those sites you're utterly in love with? :D

Yeah, there are loads of gorgeous pictures on that site. I spend at least an hour on there finding things to reblog. SO MUCH PRETTY THO.
