Manga Pimp: Vassalord
Jun. 24th, 2009 11:38 pmAnother manga pimp! It's been a couple of weeks since I've read the series, so my memory is a little shaky (I haven't re-read it yet), but I do know that I enjoyed the manga very much.

The Story
Vampires Charles J. Chrishunds (Charley) and Johnny Rayflo have a strange relationship. Charley is a cyborg, and a vampire hunter for the Vatican, while his master Johnny enjoys a playboy lifestyle. While fighting crimes involving vampires, Charley struggles to control his lust for blood and for Johnny, while Johnny delights in seducing his servant and attempts to deal with issues from his own past. (Source: Wikipedia) Someone is producing a drug that promises to turn people into vampires, and throughout the manga there are references to "Vassalord", though it's not quite clear what that is just yet. The manga follows Charley and Johnny as they search for "Vassalord" and the person behind the drug dealing, working together with a famous detective.
The Main Characters
Charley (Cherry/Chris)
Charley is part vampire, part Cyborg. Alone as a child in the middle of a warzone, he captured Johnny's attention. Johnny named Charley "Chris", and the two lived together and were very close, until one day Johnny drops "Chris" off at a church. Though it's not mentioned in the manga exactly when, the two are reunited at some point. Johnny calls him "Cherry" in reference to his virgin status. Charley is annoyed by the nickname and Johnny's very obvious attempts to flirt, but isn't pleased when Johnny looks at another. Charley is serious, dedicated and a devout believer in God; he feels that he is a sinner because of his status as a vampire and must atone for this by killing other vampires. He's quite talented at fighting, and if he goes too long without drinking Johnny's blood his inner demon comes out. He refers to Johnny as "Master".
Johnny Rayflo
Not much is known about him, except that he has a twin sister and is an object of obsession to a psycho named Barry. He's very fond of Charley, constantly making innuendos and hitting on him. He physically fights with Charley, presumably to keep him in fighting form. He's a very secretive man, even keeping things from his most precious person (three guesses who that is). Because he's a vampire, he can withstand wounds that would normally kill someone; something that is made quite obvious in the manga during on particularily gruesome scene.
In Conclusion
Though Johnny was the one to save Charley from the war zone, they don't really have a father/son relationship at all. Which is obvious pretty quickly...not only is the manga interesting, but it's also very well drawn. Though there are only a few chapters, they're very long and I still finished this series within a couple hours. I just had to know what was going to happen next. The mangaka has a wonderful art style, which deserves pimping. However, some of the pages aren't fully translated, so be aware of that.
This is almost, but not quite, yaoi.

Definitely! There is one, but it's not extremely active. How can such a great series go virtually unknown?

Date: 2009-06-25 08:35 pm (UTC)I think it might be because there aren't many chapters and that it's unfinished maybe? But it's definitely a great manga that needs a larger fanbase.

Date: 2009-06-27 03:20 am (UTC)That's probably it, or at least a large part of it. If it isn't serialized in a popular manga magazine, it probably has a harder time getting found. Oh, most definitely -- I'm hoping this pimp helps *nod*

Date: 2009-06-29 10:58 pm (UTC)Umm, I mean, it's HOT and FUNNY and I really like it.
Charley with his high colour, the glasses and those "wires" around his head totally reminds me of those guys from Clamp's Clover.

Date: 2009-06-30 03:05 am (UTC)Aww, I can't view the picture you linked -- though I do love CLAMP. Isn't Charley adorable? He's my favorite ♥ Sadly, the fandom isn't all that big. I do have a doujinshi though...
I'm so glad to know someone who's read it XDDDD
