It does have some problematic stuff - the author isn't great about LGBT characters (as in women are allowed to be bisexual and everyone else is just straight) and sometimes it's views on women can be rough. But the series gets better as it goes, and the fic *chefs kiss* I know quite a few people who read fic in the fandom but haven't read any of the books, or read just the first couple...
