Sam didn't really become a character for me until I'd seen the series all the way through.
I was initially meh about him, though he did grow on me. I like him, and I think throughout the course of the show that never really changed. (Unlike my feelings for Starbuck, Lee, or Gaius - those I flip flopped on a lot.)
I'm much too lazy to advertise too :P It's why I'm a terrible LJ correspondent - I get so lazy and then don't respond to comments until days later.
Ah, see - I've loved Chief from the beginning. I'm not sure why, I was just very fond of him. Sam grew on me.
Gaius...he's made me angry, and he's frustrated me, but I can't say I ever really hated him. Dislike him, maybe, certainly after New Caprica and when he and D'Anna sort of shut Caprica Six out.
Boomer, however - my dislike for her has been steadily growing. I felt so bad for her at first, but she keeps making choices that hurt characters I really like.
Oh, I liked Chief from the begining, but i didn't fall in love with his character until S3.
Boomer I've always more or less disliked, though Athena's not so bad. Little schizo, but not so bad.
Gaius... well, let's just say he reminds me too much of a politican.
(Though I must also admit to a deep and abiding want of a BSG AU wherein the Final Five know they're Cylons all along. They, to me, are one of the most interesting plotlines in the series)
It was...wow. I admit to crying a bit :P I find it interesting that Chief strangled Tory for killing his wife - they were together in another life. And it made sense to have Sam direct the ships into the sun - they wanted a clean slate, and Sam wouldn't survive in the simple life the human race was going to live. I didn't like that all the characters I loved split up - Chief going off on his own, Papa Adama living by himself, Kara is dead and Helo and Athena...they weren't living on their own, I know, but I kind of wanted all the familiar characters to stay in one area.
I do love the ending though, where it showed "modern times", and had the original All Along The Watchtower playing :P
I can't listen to "All along the watchtower" the same way now.
I like that they had Sam direct the ships into the sun too - it really was the only thing for him - but Kara having been an angel for the entire S4 just rubs me the wrong way. It seems like a cop-out way of dealing with her issues with Sam and Lee.

Gaius is one I hated consistently until the very, very end. He's far more sympathetic a character when I go back and watch.

I'm glad you enjoyed it though
